Does The MSI Wind U100 Still Rock?
When the ASUS Eee PC hit the notebook market more than a year ago, it was met by barely any competition. It took about 6 months for a competent competitor to surface, and that came in the form of the MSI Wind. Shortly after, Acer released the Aspire One to try its hand at netbooks. Both machines held their own, but MSI offered a 10-inch netbook for $400 while Acer’s was only 9-inches and a hundred dollars more. The Eee PC receded in comparative popularity as MSI got news around, and for the time, MSI had netbooks in the palm of their hand. But does the Wind U100 still have it?

While these three netbooks have been amended and changed over the past year, the formulas have stayed the same. They have stuck to their guns even as newer manufacturers like Gdium and FIC have flooded the market with different setups and costs in an attempt to take a part of the consumer pie.
MSI definitely got one thing right: the processor. By using the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom before it was standard it brought faster computing to the table. The Wind U100 has a younger and faster cousin, the MSI Wind U120, but we reviewed it and found it is a bit too expensive for what it can do. However, the MSI Wind U100 still competes, and is definitely fast enough to work for netbook-users. There’s a reason it’s been so successful.
As reported by HotHardware, “The original configuration available at launch, a 3-cell with 80GB hard drive, now sells for around $350 while the newer 6-cell version with a 160GB drive that we have in our lab today can be found for just over $420.” Be sure to keep it in mind if you’re on the market for a netbook – it may be old, but it holds its own.
