Free Netbooks Given Away At Microsoft Conference to Promote Windows 7

With all the competition out there, Microsoft had to take active measures to promote its newest operating system, Windows 7. At the Gold Coast leg of Microsoft’s TechEd conference, each of the 2300 attendees will receive (free of charge) an HP Mini 2140 netbook.

Microsoft wants to promote their Windows 7 operating system as much as possible, and attendees to the conference are encouraged to use their free netbooks as soon as possible so they have more time to test out this new operating system.

Conference attendees will also be able to preview the new version of Microsoft Office, “which will be able to run editable versions of Word and Excel files inside a web browser.” Window 7’s Virtual XP mode will also be demonstrated at TechEd.

Tickets to this “three-day geek-fest” cost $1,800 per attendee. Typically, the conference hosts more than 2000 IT professionals. The price this year has decreased from last year.

HP is currently the world’s largest PC maker and the HP Mini 2140 netbook that will be given away at TechEd runs on Windows XP, but HP is actively exploring its options in terms of operating systems to use on computing devices in the future.

TechEd will also be held in New Zealand. Held at Auckland’s Sky City from September 14th through the 16th, this conference may promise a sell-out, but unfortunately, not a netbook giveaway. If you’re interesting in going, make sure to save your spot by registering here.
