New netbook releases from Asus and Acer on hold until August

Both Asus and Acer have produced numerous netbook models to keep potential costumers feeling as though they are getting the latest and greatest netbook.  This marketing tactic has awarded both companies as they are currently the top netbook dealers worldwide.  Despite this fact they have decided to put a hold on new netbook releases until the middle of August.

The decision to freeze new netbook releases is likely due to the fact the Intel is releasing the Atom N550 dual core processor for netbooks in the third quarter of this year.  Asus and Acer need to liquidate excess inventory to make room for future netbooks with the N550 processor.

The faster N550 processor will increase performance but also the cost of the netbooks that carry them.  The cost increase will be minimal so current Asus and Acer netbooks with slower processors will be harder to sell.  Because of this it doesn’t make much sense for the companies to produce many new netbooks with the slower processors prior to the A550 processor release.

That would actually make a lot of sense considering most — including us — would certainly opt for faster netbooks with the dual-core action over the same old single core Atoms we’ve grown tired of. Either way, this would mark somewhat of a new strategy for the companies, which have, in the past, often added new models so quickly that choosing between them could be difficult.

Hopefully, there’s a lot of price cuts on the single core laptops soon. If one can get a really good bargain on those, perhaps he or she might choose that value for money over getting one of the new dual-core laptops.

I have one of there cheaper laptops and it works great for travel and just lugging around. I like it but I did have a tech kinda mess with it so it would work better. But all in all I like it.

I think both getting some extraordinary features then others. Because there are lot of competition in the market and only best will survive that has some fascinating stuff.

I have a laptop and two netbooks, both the Acer. I got one in white and the other in blue. Love them both. Have one at home and the other at the office. I’ve had them since March 2010 & have no problems, just love them.

Thanks for pointing that out. I did look up the model at the retailer you posted but it is running Linpus Linux Lite and not Ubuntu. Plus the Mini 9n is notable because it is from Dell, which has one of the strongest brands in computing.

Until there’s new hardware and/or a new OS, there’s not much to do differently anyway, given the stringent restrictions on innovation forced by Intel’s policy on Atom N and Microsoft’s policy on XP.

If you’re looking for a Netbook this holiday season, perhaps this is an indication that today’s selection might be as good as it gets for a short while: Acer and Asus, two of the biggest powerhouses and instigators in the Netbook movement, are apparently waiting until 2010 before releasing any new Netbooks.

I would think another reason it was put off would be the return of students to school. Many would buy their first one or update to a new one,
